Abstract

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) seeks to protect consumers against exposure to food-borne microorganisms from crops grown on farms and handled subsequently in the supply chain. The law gives new authority to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to regulate farming practices, harvesting, and processing of food crops. The FSMA has shifted the focus from responding to foodborne disease to preventing it. One key provision of FSMA introduces new uniform national standards for the quality of irrigation water. The goal of this project was to review the impact of these new standards on the practice of using recycled water for agricultural irrigation. Published in 2020.
