Abstract

This research report provides an overview of the state of the science of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in wastewater. The main objectives of the research were to characterize the impacts of solids retention time (SRT) and influent antibiotic concentrations in activated sludge systems on 1) general water quality parameters, 2) trace organic compound concentrations, 3) microbial community structure, and 4) the relative abundance and extent of antibiotic resistance. The researchers identify knowledge gaps that require further research as well as recommendations for funding for research that has potential benefits for stakeholders impacted by the spread of antibiotic resistance.
