Abstract

This research provides insights into the impact of thermal hydrolysis pretreatment and pretreatment conditions on biogas production and hydrolysis rates. The researchers looked at improving hydrolysis rates based on application of thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP), and understanding the kinetics within anaerobic digestion (AD) in relation to the physics of the substrate, origin of sludge, and digestion conditions (i.e., NH3, SRT). The project employed a combination of lab-scale, pilot-scale, and full-scale testing through an international collaboration between four utilities, two universities, and two industrial partners.
