Quantifying the Potential Benefits of Land Conservation on Water Supply to Optimize Return on Investments

The Catawba Water Management Group (18 public water utilities and an energy provider in NC and SC)  shared ways to cost-effectively mitigate potential changes in water quantity and changes caused by population growth and climate change through targeted land conservation efforts. Our presenters also discussed WRF’s new report, Quantifying the Potential Benefit of Land Conservation on Water Supply to Optimize Return on Investments (4702) through which the research team created a framework to assess the relative impacts of climate and land use change on water supply resilience at multiple scales across a watershed and mitigation through land conservation efforts focusing on geographic “hot spots”. The framework combines hot spot identification with an economic cost-benefit analysis to provide guidance on how land conservation investments may provide the greatest monetary benefit, as well as protection of water supply and quality resilience under future conditions.
