Abstract

This project examined the use of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) to treat nutrient-deficient industrial wastewater with widely varying organic loads. In order to assess the suitability of this anaerobic/aerobic process, the project team explored the effect of the initial anaerobic phase on the macronutrient requirements of activated sludge. Their results indicate that EBPR has potential as a technologically and economically superior alternative for wastewater treatment plants, and could lead to significant costs savings compared to chemical removal processes.
