Next-Generation Analytical Methods for Understanding Biological Nutrient Removal Processes
Research Impact
The project will evaluate how 'omics tools (e.g. metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metaproteomics) can be used to support biological nutrient removal (BNR) operations. 'Omics tools are next-generation molecular methods that can identify what microorganisms are present in a sample, what they are capable of, or how active they are. These tools have the potential to provide a more direct link between process performance and its biological drivers, enabling more informed monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization.
Widespread adoption for routine use at water resource recovery facilities is hindered by these tools requiring specialized expertise, having long data turnaround times, or appearing cost prohibitive. This project aims to make 'omics information easier for utilities to generate, interpret, and apply by creating a data analysis workflow (Harmonizing ‘Omics for Managing Environmental Systems, or HOMES) and validating it using case studies across a variety of BNR processes.
