This research created a framework and contents for a potable water pipeline condition assessment approach, based on a standard defect coding and condition rating system. It addresses potable water distribution and transmission pipe networks, including cast iron, ductile iron, asbestos cement, and plastic (PVC/PE) pipe materials. The framework includes a decision support process whereby water pipelines can be evaluated and prioritized for condition assessment, rehabilitation, or replacement. This project lays the foundation for the adoption of a standard protocol for water pipeline condition assessment. This benefits all water utilities as they, for the first time, will have a common set of processes, terminology, and methodology for the condition evaluation of water mains. This project also lays the foundation for good water asset management practices and reduction of data management and data mining costs. Published in 2018.
