Abstract

The goal of this project was to build and test a prototype water filter that could filter particles and chemicals using a functionalized carbon nanotube (CNT sheet), filter ions using a magnetic field, and use electronic potential to separate the contaminant ions. In order to achieve the project objectives, the Research Team developed a process to produce a new class of hybrid carbon nanotube (CNT) filter material. The process, called hybridization, combines metal or ceramic nanoparticles with CNT during the nanotube growth process. The hybrid material produced can reduce the cost of CNT sheet, but still utilize the exceptional filtration performance of the CNT material. The hybridization is accomplished during the CNT synthesis process for better integration of the materials and better filtering performance. The CNT can be hybridized with a wide variety of filter or photocatalytic materials to target a spectrum of pollutants. Published by WRF. 42 pages. Online PDF. (2018)
