Abstract

This research study examines the scale-up issues involved in running a membrane-aerated bioreactor (MABR) at the pilot scale for municipal wastewater treatment. In addition to demonstrating that energy costs associated with membrane aeration are dramatically lower than for conventional bubble aeration technology, the project also developed a computer model to predict the behavior of membrane-aerated biofilms with up to four different bacterial species competing for oxygen, COD, and nitrogen species. This study also highlights important issues related to biofilm adhesion to membranes. Published by WERF. 138 pages. Online PDF.
