Abstract
Conventional biological nutrient removal (BNR) processes are energy-intensive and require sufficient carbon to reliably meet regulatory requirements. There has been an increasing demand for sustainable, low carbon footprint, energy-efficient, and even energy-positive BNR processes. A number of innovative carbon- and energy-reducing nitrogen removal technologies have been demonstrated; however, incorporation of biological phosphorus removal into these processes has not been evaluated. This project seeks to fill this gap by investigating the feasibility and mechanisms of implementing side stream enhanced biological phosphorus removal in combination with shortcut nitrogen removal processes.
