Abstract

Study includes a comprehensive literature review and summary of the regulatory and administrative, logistical, technical, and operational experience gained in Central Europe (specifically Germany and Austria) with co-digestion systems at water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) over the past two decades. Emphasis was placed on topics relevant to utilities in the U.S. to help with practical guidance for the successful implementation of co-digestion programs. An overview of the historical, regulatory, financial, organizational, and administrative framework of co-digestion systems is included. The report includes case studies of several co-digestion field sites in southern Germany and Austria which illustrate design and operational solutions with these systems at WRRFs of different size and complexity.
