Participatory Ergonomics to Reduce Injuries in Water and Wastewater Employees

Webcast

This webcast presented the findings of WRF project 4694, Development of an Ergonomic Guide through the Use of Participatory Ergonomics Team Approach at Water and Wastewater Utilities. This research project evaluated the effectiveness of using a participatory team approach to identify ways to lower risk and prevent musculoskeletal injuries among water and wastewater industry workers. A participatory approach explicitly includes the involvement of workers and has been shown in other settings to be an effective way to identify solutions and interventions that prevent injury and improve safety. This project tested this approach by applying a team-based participatory pilot program at several utilities. Workers used their knowledge to identify and address ergonomic problems and to develop effective solutions to improve working conditions, safety, productivity, quality, morale and/or comfort. The lessons learned have been compiled into a user guide to help utilities apply this approach.
