Abstract

The goal of this report was to provide a summary of the current knowledge on energy and resources recovery from sewage sludge. Both established and emerging technologies are reviewed and examples of the most commonly used strategies are described and supported with international cases studies. The report focuses on energy and resource recovery from the residual solids and associated process streams. Because it is recognized that the recovery of energy and resource from municipal sludge will be dictated by drivers such as the market for the recovered products, by regulations that limit the options for recovery of material or energy, as well as public perception and social awareness, these topics are included in the report.
