Abstract

In 1999, WERF conducted a two-day workshop with large river experts to identify research priorities for large river systems. This report provides a summary of the workshop format and results, as well as a comprehensive annotated bibliography of large river research developed to help prepare participants for future workshop discussions. The annotated bibliography, in tandem with the workshop research recommendations, provides a baseline of current understanding of ecosystem effects relative to the scale and dynamics of large river systems; the identification of priority information gaps in the basic understanding of these systems; and a long-term research agenda for future research on large rivers.
