Reuse: Direct Potable

Abstract

There are limited examples of small-scale, decentralized potable reuse, though the potential benefits and added flexibility of small-scale reuse are substantial. This 16-month demonstration project showed that building-scale wastewater can be successfully treated to potable water reuse standards, but uncovered specific challenges and opportunities facing small-scale systems. This research adds to the growing body of literature, including the use of Pepper Mild Mottle Virus to indicate virus removal through a low-pressure membrane, and the demonstrated challenges associated with using online UV-visible spectrometry for highly purified water.
