Abstract

The road map, guidance, and protocols found in this report provide comprehensive information for wastewater treatment facilities to conduct systematic assessments of the efficiency, feasibility, and cost effectiveness of external sources of supplemental carbon to support/enhance biological denitrification processes. It describes methods for essential chemical characterization of a carbon source alternative and describes procedures and data reporting for assessing the efficiency of an external carbon source at full-scale treatment plants. Includes suggestions from stakeholders, including wastewater treatment utilities, regulatory agencies, and consultants regarding alternative carbon sources for denitrification.
