Abstract

This report examines and defines the relationship between standard freshwater WET tests and the actual effects on receiving streams. The research team developed a new approach for implementing WET tests in NPDES permits. This report demonstrates current technical challenges and issues regarding the determination of whole effluent toxicity compliance and highlights areas in need of further refinement. It also provides dischargers and regulators with information on the status of WET testing and biological assessments in the U.S., as well as ways to design more appropriate permit monitoring requirements.
