Abstract

The goal of this project was to understand how the concentrations of indicator bacteria in inland stream water, beach water, and beach sand change under rainfall induced runoff conditions. It compared the concentration dynamics of three different fecal indicators, including E. coli and enterococci and an alternative indicator C. perfringens. This project also compared cultivation-based membrane enumeration of enterococci using mEI agar with quantification using qPCR technology. The specific objectives were to monitor the concentrations of FIBs before and after rainfall runoff events in beach water and sand at Waialae-Kahala Beach and stream water and soil within the Manoa Stream watershed.
