Battery Storage System Guidance for Water and Wastewater Utilities

Distributed energy resources (DER) have increasingly been implemented by water and wastewater utilities for achieving energy independence targets, power resiliency, or meeting greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals through on-site power generation and storage. Energy generated from DERs can be stored onsite using battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and used for peak period demand management. As new BESS technologies emerge, however, questions about applications, economy of scale, cost-benefits, reliability, maintenance, and durability, continue to emerge. This project will provide guidance on BESS implementation and operation for the water and wastewater sector.
