Research Impact

This project characterized the genes involved in MIB and geosmin biodegradation and identified the key proteins that interact directly with MIB and geosmin. The project also designed and tested a simple biosensor for MIB and geosmin detection and designed probes and a real-time PCR based assay for predicting in situ taste and odor removal in a water treatment plant. Follows up the Web-only project, Towards the Development of Biosensors for the Analysis of MIB and Geosmin (see #2996). Published in 2012.
