Abstract

Conventional biological nutrient removal (BNR) processes are energy-intensive and require sufficient carbon to reliably meet regulatory requirements. There has been an increasing demand for sustainable, low carbon footprint, energy-efficient, and even energy-positive BNR processes. A number of innovative carbon- and energy-reducing nitrogen removal technologies have been demonstrated; however, incorporation of biological phosphorus removal into these processes has not been evaluated. Project 4901 filled this gap by investigating the feasibility and mechanisms of implementing side-stream enhanced biological phosphorus removal in combination with shortcut nitrogen removal processes.
