Abstract

Potential resources in the form of domestic wastewater are available in every community across America. Investment in research can make renewable energy recover standard practice, recover nutrients, and provide sustainable, carbon-neutral water reclamation services. This Technology Roadmap identifies pathways toward sustainable wastewater systems, including approaches the wastewater sector could use over the next 20-30 years. The Roadmap describes the current status of wastewater technologies, projects future treatment quality requirements, identifies research needs, and summarizes ongoing activities to meet perceived future objectives including reducing the carbon footprint while achieving lower nutrient levels.
