Abstract

The outbreak of Ebola virus disease in 2014 raised concerns about the potential for workers to be exposed to the virus in wastewater, not only through direct contact, but also through inhalation of aerosolized droplets. This research assessed the potential for inhalation exposure to aerosolized Ebola virus surrogates in wastewater systems, including toilets, aeration basins, and sewers and provides methods to evaluate aerosolization of viruses in wastewater systems.
