Abstract

With the growth in use of reclaimed or subsequent-use water, many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are looking for cost-effective ways to process water for reclamation. This report examines one such process, the use of membranes as bioreactors in place of a sedimentation step in wastewater treatment. Investigators tested several configurations of membrane bioreactors in two pilot plants in San Diego, Calif., and compared the resulting effluent with that from the full-scale plant from which the test samples were taken. This report summarizes operational, water quality, and preliminary cost data from these tests. The results of the investigation provide WWTP operators with valuable insights into this technology.
