Abstract

The existing framework for identifying risks to aquatic biota generally focuses on chemical water quality criteria, with less emphasis on physical habitat and biological community interactions. Though there are circumstances where a single chemical stressor focus may be appropriate, there are many more circumstances where aquatic biological system characteristics need to be considered. This project analyzed the effects of multiple stressors from discharges and nonpoint sources on stream invertebrates in three different ecological areas. The resulting research provides a tool for assessing the effects of multiple stressors on aquatic ecosystems, and a resource document and annotated bibliography on the application of multiple stressor concepts to the risk assessment process.
