Research Impact

This project developed a robust database of sequences of 16S rRNA, lacZ, and uidA genes obtained from positive culture samples throughout the country. The researchers obtained positive samples from membrane filtration and other enzymatic methods. Those cultures were sequenced and entered into a database that broadens existing knowledge of the possible list of bacteria that generate false positives in enzyme based tests. The project generated a genetic-based approach that provides a precise and confirmatory identification of the colonies that grow. This should greatly shorten the time needed to make a compliance decision and minimize additional operating costs.
