Hexavalent Chromium Treatment with Strong Base Anion Exchange - 4488

This project demonstrated hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] treatment performance of strong base anion exchange (SBA-IX) and chemical reductive media (CRM) technologies. In addition to hexavalent chromium removal performance, this research effort addressed treatment residuals minimization strategies for the technologies. The experimental test plan supported the design of full-scale treatment installations and answered key operational questions that impact capital and lifecycle costs. The work bridges existing information gaps with respect to Cr(VI) treatment technologies and better prepares drinking water utilities for the regulation of Cr(VI). It also helped lay the foundation for the development of a new process that potentially reduces residuals nearly an order of magnitude compared to traditional SBA-IX processes.
