This project will develop a decision tree to match failing drinking water systems in California with likely solutions, focusing on small public water systems with persistent drinking water quality violations. Systems with long-term water quality problems will be identified, along with the approaches best suited for those systems based on contaminant type and proximity to water of higher quality, and the potential range of costs for these solutions. This time-sensitive work can inform ongoing discussions at the state level on the best way to find long-lasting sustainable solutions for all failing water systems. The strategy developed under this research could be applied by other states and water systems.
