The release of excessive nutrients in coastal areas can cause severe damage to the marine environment through algal blooms, eutrophication, and a reduction in biodiversity. Such nutrients are typically transported to the ocean by wastewater discharges or agricultural runoff. This project will analyze technologies specifically designed to remove nitrogen from wastewater. A comparative technology pilot will be conducted for nitrogen reduction technologies at water utilities with footprint limitations. The pilot will identify the technologies best suited to reduce nitrogen in wastewater to reduce discharge concentrations and loads to receiving waterbodies.
