Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago
What technologies are you interested in investigating?
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) is investigating or interested in investigating application of enhanced biological phosphorus removal, shortcut biological nutrient removal, algae treatment for nutrient recovery, biosolids to energy, and odor control technologies.
What are your facility drivers/needs?
The MWRDGC’s vision statement is “Recovering Resources, Transforming Water.” The goal is to increase the percentage of constituents in the influent to the treatment plants that are recovered and reused. Therefore, the agency is interested in exploring technologies that support resource recovery, particularly nutrient recovery and renewable energy. In addition, technologies that reduce energy consumption and operation costs.
How has LIFT helped, or how would you like LIFT to help your facility?
LIFT provides a platform for MWRDGC technical staff to quickly triage the upcoming technologies to focus on the ones that could benefit the agency. It offers an effective means to learn of the work of other utilities, to network with the staff at other utilities who face similar issues, and share both success stories and lessons learned.
One way LIFT can provide support for our utility is to be the platform for establishing joint research opportunities with other utilities and research universities. Spreading out the risk helps allow opportunities to consider new technologies that previously may have been deemed too risky to consider.
If there were one technology you would pilot/collaborate on tomorrow, what would it be?
Encapsulated biocatalysts for nutrient recovery and energy reduction.
