Doosan’s LENA MBR offers advances in energy efficiency and membrane performance utilizing the inertial force generated by reciprocating motion on membrane fibers as an alternative to energy intensive air scouring in conventional MBR.

What are the benefits to implementing your technology?

1,600m3/day LENA MBR pilot plant currently in operation at the Ulu Pandan Water Reclamation Plant in Singapore.

MBR systems in general have several benefits over conventional wastewater treatment, including reducing the footprint of the plant and producing a high quality effluent for reuse. Doosan’s LENA MBR has several additional benefits compared to conventional MBRs:

  • Eliminates air scouring system – No air scouring blower & associated equipment and less internal recirculation for nutrient removal (OPEX/CAPEX savings)
  • More effective membrane fouling control – Membrane oscillation by reciprocation causes the fibers to move, and creates an inertial force on the fibers which provides more effective membrane fouling control
  • Prevent sludge accumulation within fibers – Due to the combined effect of reciprocating velocity coupled with pulsating inertial force on fibers
  • Suitable for membrane filtration –  Where it is necessary to maintain either anoxic or anaerobic conditions with less turbulence (e.g., Anaerobic MBR for methane recovery, Anoxic MBR for selenium, nitrate, sulfate removal in industrial wastewater)

Has the technology been tested, demonstrated, or implemented anywhere to date?

Yes, we have completed 2 municipal pilot tests and are currently conducting a third. The first pilot test took place at the Howard F. Current Advanced Water Treatment Plant in Tampa, FL. This consisted of a 30 m3/day (8,000 gallons/day) system which compared an aerated MBR side by side with the LENA system. This test verified that the LENA system consumed significantly less energy than air scouring without compromising the membrane function or strength.  These results led us to create a scaled-up system with a capacity of 1,600m3/day (420,000 gallons/day). We recently finished testing this system for nearly a year in Daegu, South Korea and it is currently being tested in Singapore in conjunction with Singapore’s Public Utilities Board (PUB). The results of these pilot tests have been overwhelmingly positive with energy consumption for the LENA system as low as 0.03 kWh/m3 being recorded consistently, and even lower in warm climates.

LENA MBR has also been piloted in an industrial setting. Specifically for selenium removal in mining wastewater which requires anaerobic conditions. The absence of blowers in the LENA MBR allows for zero dissolved oxygen in the MBR making it applicable for a variety of industrial wastewater treatment applications.

What are some of the next steps needed to advance the technology?

Since the system has been pilot-tested and proven in real settings, our next step is to gain our first commercial deployments. We are open to further pilot testing if it is directly linked with an upcoming project, and would also be very interested in the chance to bid on upcoming MBR projects.


We were recently accepted into LIFT, but are hoping to have chances to communicate directly with interested clients through the program. We are also hoping to network and meet people who can provide us with useful information or ideas to help commercialize the LENA MBR.
