What new technologies have you been evaluating or implementing?
The City of Stevens Point, Wisconsin is focusing on transforming its Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) to a Resource Recovery Facility. Over the past five years, the wastewater staff has put great effort into co-digestion, an aggressive high strength waste program, and maximizing biogas utilization. The facility has produced over 97% of the electricity that it consumed over the past two years through the use of a 180KW CHP Biogas Engine.
The City recently entered into a partnership with a local brewery to divert the brewery’s high strength waste from the collection system to a new High Strength Waste Lift Station that will feed directly into the anaerobic digesters. This will decrease BOD loading through the aeration train by over 20% and increase biogas production by over 20%.
What technologies are you interested in investigating?
The wastewater staff for the city is very interested in exploring energy efficient solids handling equipment that will allow us to reach Class A biosolids status. Nutrient harvesting technologies are also being discussed to remove sidestream phosphorus.
What are your facility’s drivers/needs?
The challenges we currently face are land availability for biosolids application and upcoming changes to our effluent phosphorus regulations. The operations staff will be focusing on solutions to meet these challenges over the next few years. We are currently thinking the solution will include a Class A biosolids product and nutrient harvesting to remove majority of our sidestream phosphorus.
How has LIFT helped, or how would you like LIFT to help your facility?
LIFT can help our facility greatly through information sharing. Being a small utility, the funding isn’t always available to explore or pilot new technologies. Having an educated and trustworthy source of information on these new processes and technologies will help small utilities stay informed and up to date without straining their small annual budgets.
If there is one technology you could pilot or collaborate on tomorrow, what would it be?
The technology that we would like to pilot or collaborate on would be an energy efficient low temperature biosolids dryer. Ideally, the dryer would utilize biogas as a heat source for drying and ultimately produce an EPA approved Class A biosolid.
