The Foundation at a Glance

The Water Research Foundation is the only U.S.-based nonprofit (501c3) that sponsors research to help water utilities, public health agencies, and other professionals worldwide providing safe, affordable and plentiful drinking water.  Formed in 1966, we are the nation’s only research foundation devoted solely to drinking water.

Who Uses our Research?

More than 950 subscribers (water utilities, consultants and manufacturers) rely on the science we sponsor to deliver safe and affordable water.

  • Utilities: More than 900 subscribers currently represent drinking water utilities from the U.S. Canada, Australia, England, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, South Korea, and Israel. Become a subscriber
  • Consultants: More than 40 consulting companies – private companies that engage in work that directly supports drinking water providers – currently subscribe.

  • Manufacturers: Other subscribers produce and distribute water supply products.

  • Regulators, Congress and Public Health Agencies: Because it important to base regulation, public health, and environmental policy on solid facts, our research is available for use by regulators, congress and health and environmental agencies to guide decision making.
  • Research Consumers:  Entities that do not fall into one of our membership categories (utilities, manufacturers, consultants, and agencies), can purchase our research reports individually.  Prices vary depending on the topic and year of publication.

How We Operate

While our subscribers steer the Foundation, a staff of about 40 professionals provide daily management and research oversight to ensure our subscriber’s needs are met. An elected Board of Trustees, who represents the spectrum of the water industry, governs the Foundation.

The Research Advisory Council (RAC) uses subscriber input to set our research agenda, which is approved by the Board.  We rely on subscriber volunteers to participate in research projects or Project Advisory Committees.
