Title:Guidelines for Implementing Seawater and Brackish Water Desalination Facilities (PIM)
As part of project 4078, Guidelines for Implementing Seawater and Brackish Water Desalination Facilities, this planning issues matrix (PIM) and user’s guide were developed to assist users in understanding the broad range of issues and complexities associated with planning a desalination facility.
Long Description:

Follow these steps to download and use the PIM:
  1. Create a new folder on your desktop and name it “PlanningIssuesMatrix”
  2. Download (30mb zip)and unzip the files into the new folder
  3. Open and review the PIM_Guide PDF file
  4. Open the Desal_PIM Excel file and begin to navigate

The tool is a macro-based program using Microsoft Excel and presents key issues broken down by six logical and relevant topics, for both inland and coastal facilities, based on the sequence of processes associated with a desalination facility:

  • Feedwater source
  • Pre-treatment
  • Desalting process
  • Post-treatment and distribution
  • Water use
  • Concentrate management

For each aspect of the desalination process, the PIM presents information at a getting-started level, as well as at a level of more detail for practitioners and water managers more familiar with the desalination process. The PIM also provides resources (e.g., hyperlinks to Internet resources whenever possible and appropriate) for further reading.
