Two interactive decision web tools have been developed by Malcolm Pirnie, Inc. and Hazen and Sawyer for Water Research Foundation project 2861. Their purpose is to provide guidance to utilities in evaluating the implementation of UV disinfection into existing water treatment plants (WTPs) by helping utilities evaluate their existing treatment strategy and retrofit issues associated with UV disinfection.
The Multi-barrier Assessment Tool (MBAT)
will evaluate a utility's water quality goals, source water quality, and existing treatment processes to determine whether enhanced disinfection is necessary and if UV disinfection is an appropriate technology based upon risk reduction and overall costs.
If the MBAT determines UV to be a viable treatment option, the UV Disinfection Implementation Tool (UVDIT)
will determine feasible retrofit locations, identify the risks of UV and ways to mitigate those risks, calculate conceptual costs for retrofit alternatives, and identify options that minimize risk and costs. The tool is currently unavailable at this time.
