Ozone (O3) is one of the strongest disinfectants and chemical oxidants available in drinking water treatment. It is capable of oxidizing many organic and inorganic compounds in water. However, it must be generated on site and used immediately. Due to its short half-life, typically less than 30 minutes, it can only be used as a primary disinfectant. Combinations of ozone and hydrogen peroxide (O3/H2O2) are also being used more frequently as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs).
