Cyanotoxins (also known as algal toxins) are natural toxins produced by cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that can cause human health impacts if ingested with drinking water or by skin contact in recreational waters. Cyanobacteria are microscopic organisms commonly found in fresh water sources. Cyanobacterial blooms are becoming more frequent, perhaps due to climate change.
