Endocrine Disruptors / Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products Strategic Initiative
Trace amounts of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), pharmaceuticals, and personal care products (PPCPs) have been found in drinking water for more than 30 years. These compounds are receiving growing attention from the scientific community, regulatory agencies and the public at large. The Foundation created this EDC/PPCP Strategic Initiative to help establish drinking water treatment strategies for EDCs/PPCPs, and to develop appropriate risk communication strategies. Projects funded by the program were intended to fill one or more of the following objectives:
- Improve access to relevant and accessible risk information and risk communication strategies.
- Ensure the precision and accuracy of contaminant measurement data to improve interpretations and conclusions.
- Assess watershed and treatment impact on EDC/PPCP exposure at the tap.
An expert volunteer panel developed a strategic plan to achieve these objectives.
